Cordyline australis
New Zealand's most characteristic tree. Young trees have a slender trunk, maturing to a thick branched tree. Long palm like green leaves crown the bare trunk. Impressive branched spikes up to 90 cm long in summer are covered with sweetly scented creamy white flowers, followed by whitish blue berries. Hardy, though avoid very dry sites. Always looks impressive planted in groups. Occurs naturally throughout New Zealand.
