Cercis siliquastrum
Bushy, deciduous small tree. Leaves broadly heart-shaped, emerging bronze then turning mid green. Custers of rosy-pink pea-flowers opening before or with the leaves, in clusters on the older wood. Fruit a conspicuous flattened purplish pod. Leaves turn yellow in the Autumn. It is said to be the tree that Judas Iscariot hung himself. Best in a sunny site with well drained soil. Hardy, best flowering after a cold winter.
