Cyathea medalaris
Largest of our tree ferns. Distinctive tree fern with a stout trunk, topped with numerous horizontal fronds from 2 to 6 long. The upper surface is dark green. Tends to grow slowly. Prefers a site shetered from drying winds and with overhead shade, though can be grown in the open. Once established it does tolerate dry conditions. Occurs naturally throughout New Zealand, though rare east of the main divide in the South Island.
