Prumnopitys taxifolia
CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
A mature Matai is a magnificent tree. As a juvenile it has rusty coloured leaves on tangled wiry branches. The leaves mature to a deep green. The bark is dark and falls off in thick chunks which gives the tree a 'hammer marked' trunk when mature. Prefers a sheltered semi-shaded site when young. Grows best in good soil that doesn't get too dry. Common in lowland forests in the North and South Islands.
