Tulbaghia violacea

Fast-growing, bulbous plant which forms a clump. The leaves are long, narrow, strap-like, slightly fleshy and smell of garlic when bruised. The pinkish-mauve tubular flowers, clustered into umbels of up to 20 flowers, are held above the leaves on a tall flower stalk, and appear over a long period in summer. Useful for difficult hot corners of the garden as it will tolerate prolonged drought, although it flourishes with regular watering. Prefers a sunny site. Avoid heavy wet soils, very hardy. This drought-resistant plant is from South Africa and Zimbabwe.
