Strelitzia reginea
Large evergreen perennial which forms a dense clump of large long green leaves on stiff stems. In winter and spring the distinctive flowers emerge from the ends of tall erect stems from 'beak-like' buds. Flowers are green flushed purple and orange, with blue, arrow shaped. They grow naturally on riverbanks and open glades of bush. They need a warm sub-tropical climate, good deep well drained soil, water well in summer for lush growth. Avoid frost and very hot dry sites.
