Prumnopitys ferrugineus
A mature miro is a magnificent tree. As a juvenile it has rusty coloured leaves on tangled wiry branches. The leaves mature to a deep green. The bark is grey-brown to black and falls off in large flakes. Produces large reddish-purple plum like fruits. Prefers a sheltered semi-shaded site when young. Grows best in good soil, or sandy soil that doesn't get too dry. Common in lowland and lower montane forests in the North and South Islands. Sea-level to 900 m.
