Metrosideros robusta
In native forest this plant is an epiphyte and develops into a tall upright tree. It will also grow in open sunny ground, though may not reach the same heights. It has dark green oval leaves on erect branches. Dense clusters of crimson red flowers appear November to January. Occurs naturally in the North Island and South down to Greymouth. Tolerates cold, though shelter from frost when young. Prefers good soil, but will grow in most soils. Avoid very dry sites.
