Dicksonia sqarrosa
Tree fern with a slender trunk covered with hard black bases of old frond stalks, topped with numerous horizontal fronds up to 2 metres long. The upper surface is dark green and shining. Stout rhizomes sometimes grow underground to form a new plant. The trunk is usually clothed with dead fronds. Prefers a site shetered from drying winds and with overhead shade, though can be grown in the open. Tolerant of dry sites. Occurs naturally in lowland and hilly forests throughout New Zealand.
